Root words are one of the most important tools you can give a child to enhance their word skills. So much of our English language comes from key Root Words. When a child learns one of these "magic words", he unlocks many more words that have the same root. So children can easily boost vocabulary because learning one word organically teaches him so many more! The first of its kind, Root Word Rudy introduces these "magical" words through the fun of an adventure in a picture book.
TELE means "far" or "distance".
Once a child learns this, they know that whenever they see "tele", it has something to do with something far away.
Tele is at the root of many words, including telescope, television, telegraph, telegram, telecommunication, teleport, and more!
Kids learn this and other vocabulary-unlocking words in the world's first root word picture book, "Root Word Rudy and the Mystery at the Museum".
PHONE means "sound" or "voice".
Now when a child hears "phone", they will instantly associate the word with something to do with a sound or voice, as in words like microphone, earphone, headphones, megaphone, saxophone, xylophone, phonics, videophone, etc. Just another example of the importance of root words for kids!
Now we know telephone is how we hear a voice that's far away!
The more root words readers learn, the less likely they are to be intimidated by big words.
Instead, they will use critical thinking to scan for recognizable roots to understand the meaning of the new word.
The knowledge of roots will help decipher new words, help spell familiar words, and greatly improve comprehension of words, old and new!
Once you flip that switch, the light never goes out. The learner never sees words the same...
Roots are everywhere...
From now on, they will see them!
ASTRO comes from the Greek word for "star" or celestial body. Once a child learns this, they know that whenever they see "Astro", it has something to do with stars or space! "Astro" is at the root of many modern English words,
NAUT means "sailor", or "sailing".
From this moment on, when a child hears "Naut", they will instantly associate the word with something to do with sailing or the sea.
Now we know an "Astronaut" is a STAR SAILOR!
...and that's not all...
From just these two roots, a child will now use critical thinking when he encounters many other words, like astronomy, astrology, asterisk, asteroid, astrophysics, nautical miles (aka- "knots"), nautilus and more!
